Dear Auntie Sarah,

Even though I know you will never see this letter it comforts me to write to you. You see, when we lived in the same country I would disclose everything to you and you should know how hard it is for me to break a habit. Especially when the habit is one I don’t want to break. But it is just too expensive for us to send mail overseas right now. Today I am writing to you about the new sensation that has hit the nation; the Manifest Destiny.

Because you are so far away, you probably have never heard of the concept so I will explain it to you now. Manifest Destiny is what us Americans call the idea that we are “destined” to own and live in land from sea to sea. Now I completely believe in this idea. America is the best owner for the land and we are the country that needs it the most. Plus it is bound to happen anyway. I mean we used to be this tiny sliver of land on the east coast of North America. Then after dozens of treaties and wars, we are half way to owning land from sea to sea. It only makes sense that in time we’ll own it all.

However, that is not why I am writing. I don’t need advise on something I’m already sure of. The reason I am writing is what the Manifest Destiny has done to the countries inhabiting the land we want to own. The problem is not with Great Britain. We have already agreed to give them half of Oregon and keep the other half. The problem is not with the Native Americans either. Sure they are not happy to be pushed out of their land again, but the government has power over them. No, the problem is with Mexico.

Sarah, I am worried we are going to be at war with them soon. Tensions have been running high ever since Texas rebelled and joined the U.S. If they are mad about that just wait until Congress asks them for some of their land. War is on the way, I know it in my gut. I don’t want

America to go to war once again. It seems like just yesterday we were at war with someone else. Sometimes I feel we can be too hasty to act.

The worst part of it is Johnny recently joined the army. Our little Johnny, who we used to take turns holding, has joined the army. Now if America goes to war with Mexico, Johnny’s life will be on the line. I don’t think I can live without his giggling smiles and constant jokes. You never know how terrible war is until someone you care about is fighting it.

I wish Mexico would just accept the Manifest Destiny like the American citizens have. You don’t see any of us complaining about it. Sometimes what is destined to happen doesn’t seem fair, but it is part of life. You win some and you lose some, right. And we lost some with Great Britain so it is our turn to win some. See, I always calm down when I tell things to you. I was just overreacting. I hope life is treating you well.

Sincerely your devoted niece,

Lucy
